Actually, it’s NOT all about Jesus. Churches all across North America, both boring and hip, preach this and put this text on cool web graphics. But is all really about Jesus? I don’t even think Jesus would say this about himself!
But here’s what Jesus did say:
1. “God the Father sent me, His son, down from heaven to you.” (John 6:38)
2. “I (Jesus) was sent to you to show you what God is like.” (John 17:25-26)
3. “I only do and say what my Father does and says”. (John 5:19)
Who is it all about? It seems like Jesus’ own words and life mission teach us that it’s all about the Father God! At the risk of sounding like I’m NOT a Jesus guy, I’d say Jesus would say that he was about his Father’s passion and mission. And what exactly was that? Jesus was about revealing the father heart of God to all people. And if that mission was really what Jesus came to do, then I’m about doing what Jesus did, as lame as I often do it.
I think this perspective changes us from a popular neo-fundamentalist mindset to a missional mindset. We don’t have to prove to our culture that we are right, because, we are often wrong. Or, if we believe we are right, we are often wrong in expressing our “rightness”. But, if we are about revealing the Father heart of God instead of proving how right we are in our own little theological bubble (we are brilliant in our own eyes, aren’t we?), we wouldn’t even have enough time in the day to live out the Father’s love to the world around us.
So, the next time some hip, smug, angry young theologian drops a “it’s all about Jesus” pronouncement on you, smile, and say, “No, actually it’s not.”
